​Overview
The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) and its Digital Mapping Laboratory (DML) is seeking a GIS Analyst to support on-going grant-related mapping efforts across the state of Idaho.
Based in Moscow, Idaho, the GIS Analyst will support Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) staff in grant-related responsibilities and research including database creation and management, digital cartography, and geologic mapping. The position reports to the Digital Mapping Lab Manager and requires the development and maintenance of GIS and non-spatial relational databases in a collaborative team environment. High-level proficiency of ESRI (ArcGIS) software is required.

​The position is renewed annually, contingent upon funding and performance.

Principle duties are:
 
1) supporting agency projects through GIS analysis, database design, creative problem solving, and computer programming and scripting;2) creating, managing, and maintaining spatial and nonspatial data in standardized geodatabase schema, including conversion of legacy databases; 3) creating geologic maps using both GIS and vector graphic software; 4) supporting the IGS mission through collaboration with IGS staff on agency planning, training, and documentation, among other tasks.

Unit Overview

The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is a non-regulatory state agency whose mission is to provide the state with timely and relevant geologic information. With offices in both Moscow and Boise, members of the IGS fulfill this mission through applied geologic research and collaboration with federal and state agencies, academia, and the private sector. The Survey’s DML is central to compiling, producing, and delivering new digital geologic maps and publications for the agency.
Funding This position is contingent upon the continuation of work and/or funding.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Provide GIS support by:
  • Supporting projects through GIS and database design and creative problem-solving
  • Assisting geologic and mapping lab staff with map and GIS deliverables associated with USGS STATEMAP grants
  • Creating, converting, and maintaining GIS datasets in standardized geodatabase schema
    Employing, modifying, and creating computer programs and scripts to assist with GIS projects.

Key Accountability Capture geologic map data digitally for both publication and regional database purpose by:
  • Using several software packages and hardware systems to aid in the map-making process and provide a high level of quality control to the data capture process
  • Digitizing, editing, and attributing map objects from geologic field maps according to internal and contract standards
  • Editing and maintaining map database tables
  • Creating and compiling accurate metadata to comply with IGS, USGS, and contract standards.

Key Accountability Generate accurate and well-constructed geologic map publications by:
  • Using ArcGIS and Adobe Suite products to generate scientifically accurate and esthetically pleasing map documents
  • Working with ArcGIS style files to manage symbolization of map features
  • Importing GIS-generated layers into Adobe Illustrator to build map layouts
  • Packaging GIS datasets and map documents for publication.

Key Accountability Contribute to the overall Survey mission by:
  • Communicating regularly with staff and administration regarding in-house GIS and geologic digital data management
  • Providing input to Survey staff for project and agency planning purposes
  • Writing documentation for various GIS and data management procedures
  • Providing general training to staff in the use of GIS, databases, and applications as necessary.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience
  • Experience in the application of ESRI Geographic Information Systems software including data analysis, modeling, geoprocessing, data capture, data conversion, relational database design, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online as applied in the geological sciences.
  • Experience using vector graphics and desktop publishing software, such as Adobe Illustrator.
  • Experience in scripting languages used in GIS and relational databases, such as Python, SQL, or Visual Basic, and willingness to learn more as needed.
  • Experience in managing several projects concurrently.
  • Experience in editing and writing business correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in the application materials.
  • Experience in working in a customer service-oriented team environment to accomplish shared goals.
  • Experience in using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, email and internet research.

​Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, or closely related field AND two or more years of applied GIS work experience OR
  • Master’s degree in GIS, Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field with extensive demonstrable experience applying GIS to problems in geological sciences.

Additional Preferred
  • Three or more years of applied GIS work experience.
  • Previous experience working with a State or Federal Geological Survey.
  • Experience working with geological data.
  • Proficient knowledge of geological mapping principles and skills.
  • Working knowledge of GIS-based, web data delivery application techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to automate GIS workflows using novel, self-made Python scripts.
  • Knowledge of QA/QC techniques to assess the quality, accuracy, and content of spatial databases and GIS deliverable products and publications.

Physical Requirements
Ability to carry and/or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.
