The State of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has an immediate need for an intern with ArcGIS experience who also has a background in environmental science specific to water quality.
This is an unpaid internship with our Watershed Management section within DEQ headquarters in Portland, Oregon. This internship opportunity provides an excellent gateway to future employment opportunities with DEQ as well as the opportunity for a lucky student to gain meaningful work experience to enhance their resume. Please advise any interested students to email their resume, along with their unofficial academic college transcripts to, Rebecca McKechnie at:
Description of this internship:
Oregon DEQ currently uses ambient monitoring station locations using the latitude and longitude of stream mouth and the distance upstream (in miles) where the station is located (LLID). This project would migrate water quality sampling sites from the LLID stream line work to the NHD stream network on a basis-by-basin approach. This work would occur in the Deschutes Basin. Water quality sampling sites in the basin will be migrated to the NHD high line work using established tools and a written procedure. Extensive and detailed QA/QC using documented procedures will be a major part of the project.
Familiarity with ArcGIS is preferred; use of ArcGIS Model Builder is a plus. This project would give the intern an opportunity to learn about NHD and the use of GIS tools for foundational water quality management as well as the opportunity to interact with water quality professionals at DEQ.
Duration: 3 months
