The Position
The City of Portland is now hiring a GIS Technician II!
GIS Technicians II are responsible for performing specialized and detailed GIS mapping and analysis duties. Incumbents develop, implement and maintain GIS data, prepare and produce maps and other graphic representations, and perform various complex spatial analysis.

Duties include:
  • Creating and maintaining GIS data and relational databases
  • Performing complex vector and raster-based spatial analysis;
  • Performing statistical analysis of GIS data
  • Developing analytical tools and models for performing spatial analysis
  • Developing and maintaining web-based maps and tools
  • Using cartographic and graphic design techniques to represent spatial data as maps, charts and graphics
  • Packaging, documenting and distributing GIS data to other agencies and the public.

An ideal candidate will have the ability to manage time and workload in an independent manner. 

The current vacancies are with the Portland Bureau of Transportation, although other bureaus may use the list generated from this recruitment to fill future vacancies.

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Knowledge of geographic information system concepts, practices and techniques, such as: computer mapping and attribute data conversion, transfer, manipulation and analysis.
  2. Experience applying the methods and techniques used in maintaining and editing GIS data and records
  3. Experience using GIS software, computer-aided drafting, graphics and/or other applications to carry out assigned responsibilities. (Please list specific software)
  4. Experience performing spatial analysis and creating data queries using a variety of data querying tools.
  5. Experience interpreting engineering maps, graphs, detailed plans, legal descriptions, satellite and/or aerial images.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with bureau staff and management, members of the public and others encountered in the course of work.

The Recruitment Process

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list. You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information. Additional evaluation may be required prior to establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.
